Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Class
Our perform ACL rehab class aims to mimic the rehabilitation process received in an elite sport environment. Whether you are preparing for, or recovering from ACL surgery, our expert clinicians will take you through an individualised exercise programme carried out in a group environment. With the overall aim of guiding you from injury back to peak performance and a safe and effective return to sport, we focus on developing good movement patterns matching specific knee flexibility and loading exercises alongside full body conditioning and cardio vascular training.
Barre Plus is a mixture of ballet, Pilates and aerobics set to funky music. It integrates fat burning work, with muscle strengthening to tone and reshape the entire body.
A large proportion of the class is taken standing at the barre, and so works on posture, which helps improve your core stability. Each exercise can be tailored to your individual needs, and so suits absolutely everyone, and don’t worry about your fitness level, as everyone’s fitness levels can be accommodated. So come along to achieve the lean, sculptured body that you want, and banish the bingo wings and bulge! The class is run by Mel South, Perform's highly specialist physiotherapist and Barre Plus instructor.
Conditioning for Runners
By cross-training through gym conditioning and alternative modes of exercise, your body adapts faster and more efficiently than just simply running alone. The Perform Running class delivers a range of exercises that focus on cardiovascular fitness, joint mobility, joint stability and muscle activation through strengthening exercises. The class also aims to help you prevent injury through education and pre-habilitation techniques. The class is run by our sports rehabilitator who will take you through an individualised exercise programme carried out in a group environment. The class aims to help you achieve optimum performance and conditioning for any running event you may be training for.
What is Pilates?
Pilates is an exercise principle using dynamic stabilisation that reconditions the body from the central core to prevent the recurrence of and treat pain and/or weakness. It focuses on stretching and strengthening the whole body, helping to improve co-ordination of deep postural and stability muscles, breathing and arm & leg movements with control, suppleness and flexibility.
Pilates at Perform Southampton
The classes are small with a maximum of eight clients so there is plenty of individual attention to ensure the correct technique is followed. We practice slow, controlled movements on the mat and we may utilise small pieces of equipment such as Thera-bands, balls, Pilate’s rings and light weights. The classes will be run by a fully qualified physiotherapist who is trained in APPI Pilates.
At Perform Southampton we offer two varieties of Pilates – “Clinical Pilates” and “Advanced Pilates”.
Which Pilates class is right for me?
Clinical Pilates: designed especially for people who have or have had pain and injuries or require specialist physiotherapy attention.
Advanced Pilates: This modified form of Pilates is designed especially for people who no longer have pain or injury and have already completed the clinical Pilates course or have done Pilates in the past but would like to progress their level of core strength to improve their sporting performance or general function.
So how do I book a Pilates class?
If you're new to Pilates or Perform it is essential you have an initial assessment so we can screen you for any injuries or particularly weak areas, find out exactly what you want to achieve by coming to Pilates and teach you the basics before you start. This is a 60 minute one-to-one appointment which really helps you get the most out of the classes. The charge for this is £52.
If you are an existing Perform patient then all you need to do is talk to your physiotherapist who will assess your suitability and complete an appropriate referral providing you with the basics before you start.
How much does it cost?
Initial Assessment (1 hour) - £55
Clinical or Sporting Pilates course of 6 classes - £60
Individual one-to-one Pilates sessions (clinical or advanced, 45 minutes) - £52
You will need to pay for the full course in advance (or pro-rata if joining part way through a course).
Post-Operative Hip and Knee Class
What is it?
Our hip and knee class is a physiotherapy-led circuit designed specifically for people who have had either a hip or knee joint replacement. Normally you will attend the class two to three weeks post your operation.
Who can access the class?
Referral is from your Charted Physiotherapist either here at Perform or the Spire Southampton Hospital. If you had your operation elsewhere we would love you to attend, but request you see a physiotherapist at Perform first for an initial assessment.
Where will the class take place and how long will it run?
The classes are held in the Perform gym and will be supervised by a Chartered Physiotherapist, Sports Rehabilitator and Assistant all trained in understanding your surgery and rehabilitation needs.
The class is an hour long and exercises are appropriately paced to help you to improve muscle strength, range of movement and function post-surgery. We also emphasize good balance and work closely on improving your mobility.
What will happen during the class?
There are approximately 10 to 15 stations for you to complete depending on your operation and current level of ability. There will always be someone available to help you with your exercises; however we encourage you to be as independent as possible to help you return to full function. Our team will progress your exercises as appropriate and are happy to provide written exercises for you to continue at home.
During the session there will be an opportunity for you to meet with the physiotherapist and review your progress. There is one break during the session where the physiotherapist will deliver a tailored talk, allowing you to rest and rehydrate. There will also be a question and answer session where you can share your concerns, or contribute with your own experiences if you want.
Classes are lively and it is a great chance to meet and talk to other people who have undergone similar surgery.
Rehab and Conditioning (RAC) Class
The rehab and conditioning class is an hour long class that follows on from the post-operative class, Patients have to be referred in by their physiotherapist and the session starts with a warm up taken by one of the exercise rehabilitators. There are numerous exercises placed out on the gym floor specifically designed to challenge all individuals and these exercises have been adapted to work your muscles, balance and coordination to a higher degree than the previous class. In this class patients have a free reign of which exercises they would like to do and rehabilitators available for any guidance, questions or help they may have. If there is anything specific that you would like to work on then one of our rehabilitators can give you some exercises that will specifically target that area with focus on your sport or hobbies.
